Tyler is a recent graduate of Auburn University, where he swam under head coach Brett Hawke. In his four years at Auburn, the Tigers also won two NCAA team championships.

Tyler grew up in an athletic family, as his father played golf for the University of Illinois, and his brother Elliott currently swims for Eastern Illinois University. Before he settled on swimming, Tyler also played golf and ran track & field and cross country.
